AMC

American Mathematics Competitions

The AMC (American Mathematics Competitions) is an important math competition organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), aimed at stimulating students' interest in mathematics and enhancing their problem-solving skills. The competition consists of multiple levels, including AMC 8 for students in grade 8 and below, and AMC 10 and AMC 12 for students in grade 10 and 12 and below.

The exam content covers a variety of mathematical fields, such as algebra, geometry, and number theory. Students who perform well have the opportunity to advance to higher-level competitions, such as the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) and USAMO (United States of America Mathematical Olympiad), where they face more challenging mathematical problems.

The AMC not only provides a platform for students to showcase their mathematical talents but also helps them improve their problem-solving abilities and mathematical thinking, making it an important starting point for many math enthusiasts.

Main Subjects

  • Algebra

    equations、inequalities、functions、sequences、series

  • Geometry

    plane geometry、coordinate geometry、solid geometry

  • Number Theory

prime numbers、divisibility、greatest common divisors、least common multiples

  • Combinatorics

    counting principles、permutations、combinations

  • Probability

    basic probability concepts、combinatorial probability problems

  • Mathematical Reasoning and Logic

    logic、mathematical induction、set theory、other reasoning techniques

Competition

  • AMC8

The AMC 8 is for students in 8th grade and below (ages 13 and under). It covers basic topics like algebra, geometry, and number theory. The exam has 25 multiple-choice questions and lasts 40 minutes. With a low difficulty level, it encourages younger students to explore math and develop problem-solving skills. It’s a great entry point into math competitions.

  • AMC10

The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below (ages 16 and under). It includes topics like algebra, geometry, and combinatorics. The exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions and lasts 75 minutes. It’s more challenging than AMC 8, testing students' problem-solving and reasoning skills. High scorers can advance to the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination).

  • AMC12

The AMC 12 is for students in 12th grade and below (ages 18 and under). It covers advanced topics in algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. The exam has 25 multiple-choice questions and lasts 75 minutes. AMC 12 is more difficult and suited for students with strong math skills. High achievers can qualify for AIME and even the USAMO (United States of America Mathematical Olympiad).

What Can You Obtain From AMC?

Participating in the AMC (American Mathematics Competition) can significantly enhance both your college and career prospects.

For college admissions, strong AMC results can give you an edge, especially when applying for programs in mathematics, physics, computer science, and related fields. Many top universities value mathematical ability, and excellent scores can help secure scholarships or academic opportunities.

In terms of employment, AMC results strengthen your resume, particularly in fields like technology, finance, and data analysis. Many companies (e.g., Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs) value mathematical skills, and a strong AMC score demonstrates your problem-solving and analytical abilities, opening up more career opportunities.
